We study this problem from the viewpoint of $g$-modeling, comparing two nonparametric strategies for estimating the unknown mixing distribution: a Bayesian empirical Bayes strategy, based on the Dirichlet process posterior, and a quasi-Bayesian empirical Bayes strategy, based on Newton's algorithm.
