The latter is the generating function for volumes of discretized (open) moduli spaces $M_{g,s}^{\\mathrm{disc}}$ given by $N_{g,s}(P_1,\\dots,P_s)$ for $(P_1,\\dots,P_s)\\in{\\mathbb Z}_+^s$.
