Accordingly, we introduce a class of sequence kernels that exploit evolutionary substitution matrices as well as local linearity and demonstrate that the resulting Gaussian processes provide data-efficient models of protein property landscapes, frequently outperforming alternatives that rely on foundation model embeddings.
