The splashing threshold, cavity formation, cavity evolution and the maximum cavity dimensions are quantified as a function of the Weber number and the impact angle. We compare the numerical results with recent experimental work by Gielen et al. [Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 083602 (2017)].
