This leads to directed light scattering, which can be exploited to distinguish qualitatively different regions of the flow. For the past four decades, the gold standard in rheoscopic flow visualization has been Kalliroscope, a commercial product consisting of crystalline guanine particles. Recently, however, worldwide production of crystalline guanine has dropped precipitously, leading the Kalliroscope Corporation to halt production in 2014.
