Due to the geometry of the cable and the helical arrangement of the coated conductors (CC), the current follows a non-trivial pattern inside each CC. For instance, for the case of a single-layer cable, the current flow is mostly axial along the outer face of the CCs and mostly azimuthal along their inner face.
