For kiloelectron-volt electron energies, even optical photon emission and absorption produce appreciable quantum recoils, endowing the electron with a discrete and controllable energy ladder. Starting from relativistic quantum electrodynamics, we derive an exact recoil-resolved interaction Hamiltonian in a traveling wave picture.
