First, it surveys the current status of the synthesis of rational multivariable ($n$-dimensional) passive linear shift-invariant bounded-real (or positive-real) transfer functions as scattering (or immittance) matrices of networks composed of a finite number of $n$ types of inductive and capacitive elements together with memoryless reciprocal and nonreciprocal components, such as transformers and gyrators.
