Hamiltonian Monte Carlo is another state-of-the-art sampler, exploiting fictitious momentum to guide Markov chains through complex target distributions. We establish an important connection between the zigzag sampler and a variant of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo based on Laplace-distributed momentum.
