In this work, we report the observation of robust, self-generated SOTs in a nominally symmetric, heavy-metal-free MgO/NiFe/MgO trilayer - a geometry where such torques are theoretically forbidden. By combining harmonic Hall measurements with SQUID magnetometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we identify the symmetry-breaking origin: a 1.8 nm magnetic dead layer at the bottom interface.
