In hydrodynamic descriptions of cohesive tissues, their occurrence implies a non-zero rate of variation of cell density. We show how linear nonequilibrium thermodynamics allows to express this rate as a combination of relevant thermodynamic forces: chemical potential, velocity divergence, and activity.
