Although epithelial monolayers are often modeled as two-dimensional (2D) elastic surfaces, they distinguish themselves from conventional thin elastic plates in three important ways - the presence of an apical-basal polarity, spatial variability of cellular thickness, and their nonequilibrium active nature.
