Placing the nanostructure on a substrate converts its morphology from achiral to chiral. Chirality leads to pronounced differential extinction, i.e., circular dichroism and optical rotation, or equivalently, circular birefringence, which would be strictly forbidden in the absence of a substrate or heterogeneity.
