This system utilizes a combination of an all-solid-state mode-locked sum-frequency generation (SFG) laser (1.7-GHz bandwidth, 0.7-ns pulse width) as a light source and a single-mode optical fiber for beam transference. However, optical fibers induce nonlinear effects, especially self-phase modulation (SPM). We studied SPM in our photonic crystal fiber (PCF). SPM broadens the spectrum of a laser beam and decrease the efficiency of bright laser guide star generation.
