Most ferroelectrics employed in devices are proper ferroelectrics, where spontaneous polarization is the primary order parameter. Unfortunately, the Curie temperature of proper ferroelectrics is drastically reduced as the ferroelectric becomes thin; nearly all proper ferroelectrics need to be thicker than several unit cells.
