Here we show that dislocation-loop formation in diamond is a \\emph{first-order phase transition}. We build a Ginzburg-Landau theory of it whose order parameter -- the loop area -- and coefficients are fixed directly from quantum-mechanically accurate machine-learned atomistic simulations.
