First, at early cosmic times, the Milky Way was a disordered protogalaxy, which subsequently \"spun up\" to a second kinematic phase marked by star formation occurring in a rotating, thick stellar disk. The thick disk phase later transitioned to a third (and final) phase with star formation occurring in a cold, thin stellar disk.
