It integrates the 3-D numerical mode-matching (NMM) method with a tree-cotree-based mixed finite element method (MFEM). In the NMM, the fields in the 3-D layered media are reduced to a superposition of 2-D waveguide eigenmodes, while the MFEM discretizes the 3-D scattering region.
