According to a phase space (PS) approach that parametrizes electronic states ($|\\Phi\\rangle$) and electronic energies ($E$) by nuclear position and momentum (i.e., $|\\Phi(\\mathbf{R},\\mathbf{P}) \\rangle$ and $E(\\mathbf{R},\\mathbf{P})$), we find that the presence of degenerate spin degrees of freedom leads to broken symmetry ground states.
