These heuristics are reminiscent of techniques from robust statistics, commonly used for estimation in outlier-rich (``heavy-tailed'') regimes. In this paper, we present a detailed empirical study to characterize the heavy-tailed nature of the gradients of the PPO surrogate reward function.
