The fraction of these voids is characterized by the porosity of the structure, which influences the bulk mechanical properties of the material. Most literature on the mechanics of porous materials has focused on the density-dependence of their elastic properties. In addition to porosity, other pore characteristics, namely pore-size and shape described by the pore-size distribution, and pore-wall size and shape, also influence the bulk response of these materials.
