We combine Fe K-edge X-ray absorption measurements with second-generation Car--Parrinello ab initio molecular dynamics and all-electron Gaussian and augmented-plane-wave simulations for an iron(II) N-heterocyclic carbene photosensitizer in acetonitrile solution and in the crystalline phase.
