Pure lexical matching via an inverted index falls short in this respect due to several factors: a) lack of understanding of hypernyms, synonyms, and antonyms, b) fragility to morphological variants (e.g. \"woman\" vs. \"women\"), and c) sensitivity to spelling errors.
