Here, we assemble 40-nm nitrogen-vacancy nanodiamonds at the surface of porous, birefringent vaterite microspherulites. This carbonate biomineral provides a polarization-addressable body frame, anisotropic emission redistribution, and a proton-active thermodynamic interface.
