We discuss the systematic uncertainties in the recovery of dark energy properties from the use of baryon acoustic oscillations as a standard ruler. We demonstrate that while unknown relativistic components in the universe prior to recombination would alter the sound speed, the inferences for dark energy from low-redshift surveys are unchanged so long as the microwave background anisotropies can measure the redshift of matter-radiation equality, which they can do to sufficient accuracy. The mismeasurement of the radiation and matter densities themselves (as opposed to their ratio) would manifest as an incorrect prediction for the Hubble constant at low redshift. In addition, these anomalies do produce subtle but detectable features in the microwave anisotropies.

  1. DESI 2024 VI: Cosmological Constraints from the Measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations

    astro-ph.CO 2024-04 accept novelty 7.0

First-year DESI BAO data are consistent with flat LambdaCDM and, when combined with CMB, show a 2.5-3.9 sigma preference for evolving dark energy (w0 > -1, wa < 0) that strengthens with certain supernova datasets.

  2. DESI DR2 Results IV: Alcock-Paczy\'nski Measurements from the Lyman Alpha Forest and Cosmological Constraints

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

The full shape of DESI DR2 Lyman-alpha forest correlations constrains the distance ratio DM/DH at z=2.33 to 1.0%, twice as precise as BAO alone.

  3. DESI DR2 Results IV: Alcock-Paczy\'nski Measurements from the Lyman Alpha Forest and Cosmological Constraints

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0

    DESI DR2 Lyman-alpha forest full-shape correlations yield a 1% Alcock-Paczyński measurement at z=2.33 and 0.8% distance ratio constraints.

  4. The DESI Experiment Part I: Science,Targeting, and Survey Design

    astro-ph.IM 2016-10 unverdicted novelty 4.0

DESI will target luminous red galaxies to z=1, emission-line galaxies to z=1.7, quasars for tracers and Ly-alpha forest at 2.1<z<3.5, plus a bright galaxy survey, to obtain more than 30 million redshifts for BAO and m...
