We use the Regge-Teitelboim method to treat surface integrals in gauge theories to find global charges in Chern-Simons theory. We derive the affine and Virasoro generators as global charges associated with symmetries of the boundary. The role of boundary conditions is clarified. We prove that for diffeomorphisms that do not preserve the boundary there is a classical contribution to the central charge in the Virasoro algebra. The example of anti-de Sitter 2+1 gravity is considered in detail.

  1. Enhanced Conformal $BMS_3$ Symmetries

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A boundary-condition analysis of extended conformal gravity in 3D yields a new nonlinear W(2,2,2,2,1,1,1) asymptotic symmetry algebra whose central charges are fixed by the Virasoro central charge.

  2. On Integrable Structures on Non-compact Boundaries in Three-Dimensional Gravity

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In the diagonal (Cartan) sector of AdS3 gravity, the radial flow of the quasi-local stress tensor satisfies an exact T Tbar-like equation, while the boundary time evolution forms an integrable bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy.

  3. Holographic reconstruction for AdS Wilson line networks and scalar Witten diagrams

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Wilson line networks in AdS2 are reconstructed from boundary conformal blocks, and 3-point scalar Witten diagrams decompose into sums of such networks.

  4. Boundary dynamics of Maxwell-invariant three-dimensional Chern-Simons gravity

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A Maxwellian extension of flat Liouville theory is derived as the boundary dual of Maxwell-invariant 2+1 Chern-Simons gravity, and is shown to match a geometric action and a Carrollian expansion of the AdS3 dual.

  5. Asymptotic structure of three-dimensional Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity coupled to spin-3 fields

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

The asymptotic symmetry algebra of three-dimensional Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity with spin-3 fields is a new nonlinear algebra, hs3max-bms3, which is also obtained as the flat limit of three copies of the W3 algebra.

  6. Bosonization, BTZ Black Hole Microstates, and Logarithmic Correction to Entropy

    hep-th 2025-08 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

BTZ black hole microstates under collective-field boundary conditions are labeled by Young diagrams, and the logarithmic correction to their entropy is -1/2, one-loop exact and identical for two boundary Hamiltonians.
