We show that energy is transferred from the black hole to the wave, giving rise to a negative absorption cross-section. Moving black holes absorb radiation and deposit energy in external radiation. Due to this effect, a black hole hole of mass M moving at relativistic speeds in a cold medium will appear to be surrounded by a bright \"ring\" of diameter 3\\sqrt{3}GM/c^2 and thickness GM/c^2.","authors_text":"Rodrigo Vicente, Vitor Cardoso","cross_cats":["astro-ph.HE","hep-th","physics.optics"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"gr-qc","submitted_at":"2019-06-24T18:00:04Z","title":"Moving black holes: energy extraction, absorption cross-section and the ring of fire"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"1906.10140","kind":"arxiv","version":2},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:10885a48dcbfad374ea233d5a129ccb993cea65d5b5ffebddfdbb1201d70c6bb","target":"record","created_at":"2026-07-05T00:10:38Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"a3e3c3917b65eeacd917f11f6582dbe83ee779c579cee1bfe71e4050604b6188","cross_cats_sorted":["astro-ph.HE","hep-th","physics.optics"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"gr-qc","submitted_at":"2019-06-24T18:00:04Z","title_canon_sha256":"8029a32cf3085e406b4ab4c781ad4838e2304e4ba420b19fa88b72c1ffb07e5c"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"1906.10140","kind":"arxiv","version":2}},"canonical_sha256":"d66203c9633c89f5dfeb818b69b55e0290161e020a67cc76eef3e4bcd91f7291","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"d66203c9633c89f5dfeb818b69b55e0290161e020a67cc76eef3e4bcd91f7291","first_computed_at":"2026-07-05T00:10:38.757887Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-07-05T00:10:38.757887Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"TPPnp5jopsUv9BETVB0pVQJKOeLaEXm3KaFIwtZYf81oXxzesT1N0TppEGC5Yn4rV7uO3rgdmyC1L8MQRFL2Dw==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-07-05T00:10:38.758369Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"1906.10140","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":2}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:10885a48dcbfad374ea233d5a129ccb993cea65d5b5ffebddfdbb1201d70c6bb","sha256:a9dada18de49eb6795d1b1b8d8aa5cb9c7f5d5084cc2a8facb6062e837ba1f30"],"state_sha256":"2e6c8116c741054f47e32c54c941cb53bc60c2410e02856b84632cae1e8cb163"}
