Spin defects in two-dimensional layered van der Waals materials are just emerging to be investigated. Here we demonstrate that optically-addressable spin ensembles in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) can be generated by femtosecond laser irradiation. We observe optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) of hBN spin defects created by laser irradiation. We show that the creation of spin defects in hBN is strongly affected by the pulse energy of the femtosecond lase","authors_text":"Igor Aharonovich, Jonghoon Ahn, Mehran Kianinia, Niranjan Shivaram, Peng Ju, Siddhant Pandey, Tongcang Li, Xingyu Gao","cross_cats":["cond-mat.mes-hall"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"quant-ph","submitted_at":"2020-12-06T07:57:40Z","title":"Femtosecond Laser Writing of Spin Defects in Hexagonal Boron Nitride"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"2012.03207","kind":"arxiv","version":2},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:502602e51d51ecbf7a5b4814cdf943eddd2df4a6807e3f844708d5fb978039fa","target":"record","created_at":"2026-07-05T02:34:45Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"efc281eda32716845fa0fd8cd56439d29692c4d678aca7cd15a8578828d3e300","cross_cats_sorted":["cond-mat.mes-hall"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"quant-ph","submitted_at":"2020-12-06T07:57:40Z","title_canon_sha256":"487112fd51520df3f4d01f17079b626c01f1b222a73eced265240e001d01444d"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"2012.03207","kind":"arxiv","version":2}},"canonical_sha256":"df5f2450e87ab247f449f3775dabebb35ab95b5b27f33313bc2059eaa3682cc3","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"df5f2450e87ab247f449f3775dabebb35ab95b5b27f33313bc2059eaa3682cc3","first_computed_at":"2026-07-05T02:34:45.175112Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-07-05T02:34:45.175112Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"2XF4AC9PFiinfSDEdKXI+fzoMSlhY1GLIw9pTiv2sj6KFevnOyTcKshOZfIsAT7/nQ+k4T6r0rPqHOfokWN2Bg==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-07-05T02:34:45.175604Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"2012.03207","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":2}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:502602e51d51ecbf7a5b4814cdf943eddd2df4a6807e3f844708d5fb978039fa","sha256:16678b5f613b018b59399c6011fc56a021739f0943a260ef01cf302b94ac2797"],"state_sha256":"37dcf1d9089a3a2ed95c0ba5922f698de7113ad8f17e40b096cc94112bf619eb"}
