This result has several applications in representation theory, operator algebras, ergodic theory and topological dynamics. In particular, we show that for any such irreducible lattice $\\Gamma < G$, the left regular representation $\\lambda_\\Gamma$ is weakly contained in any weakly mixing representation $\\pi$.
