When the magnetic flux crosses a diffraction node of the critical current interference pattern, the superconducting phase undergoes a jump of $\\pi$ and a voltage pulse is generated at the extremes of the SQUID. Under periodic drive this allows one to generate a sequence of sharp, evenly spaced voltage pulses.
