In spin ice, magnetic frustration leads to highly degenerate yet locally constrained ground states. Together, they form a highly unusual magnetic state -- a \"Coulomb phase\" -- whose excitations are pointlike defects -- magnetic monopoles -- in the absence of which effectively no dynamics is possible.
