Traditional bias-adjustments are closely connected to the Silverstein equation. Based on the theory of random matrices, we show that Ridge estimation of the first-stage parameters reduces the implicit price of bias-adjustments. This leads to a trade-off, allowing for less costly estimation of the causal effect, which comes along with improved asymptotic properties. Our theoretical results nest existing ones on bias approximation and adjustment with ordinary least-squares in the first-stage regression and, moreover, generalize t","authors_text":"Gabriel Vollert, Helmut Farbmacher, Michael M\\\"uhlegger, Rebecca Groh","cross_cats":[],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"econ.EM","submitted_at":"2024-08-16T07:26:01Z","title":"Revisiting the Many Instruments Problem using Random Matrix Theory"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"2408.08580","kind":"arxiv","version":2},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:b99d2f15496530dc31b289cfb22741bd0309fc6da498a55f1566b6b023c12480","target":"record","created_at":"2026-07-05T11:57:32Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"bf16e200c6645763ae6c4c7849daf34e541422bb93f919101ec0f6829a1c97df","cross_cats_sorted":[],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"econ.EM","submitted_at":"2024-08-16T07:26:01Z","title_canon_sha256":"da0b66917750d33f312b3c55e87319bdc9414b85f10297887e3f87d1f6553f5e"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"2408.08580","kind":"arxiv","version":2}},"canonical_sha256":"f666ef749ad6b05da75fde5fd82310df66e3d3d361b35619b149b1e8d10fe598","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"f666ef749ad6b05da75fde5fd82310df66e3d3d361b35619b149b1e8d10fe598","first_computed_at":"2026-07-05T11:57:32.076432Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-07-05T11:57:32.076432Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"F2rils25e1CtYyGCZFr1GmiGfH7gXKxm//Je/6uUmTHsoETXNLl5fq7l5npUaOOXxMey3dDLSb8mgDABigstAQ==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-07-05T11:57:32.076876Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"2408.08580","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":2}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:b99d2f15496530dc31b289cfb22741bd0309fc6da498a55f1566b6b023c12480","sha256:38f5499a71843a86bf64746eefefbe4f9075bc7d1b6cb03fed6c9e35923df114"],"state_sha256":"05527e04331528b934ca9a911dbd948762cff84eaa2900082ed0ae21c0711bd6"}
