Turbulence is excited just behind the shock front via Kelvin--Helmholtz, Rayleigh--Taylor, or Richtmyer--Meshkov instabilities, and plasma particles are continuously accelerated by the interaction with the turbulence. The turbulence gradually decays as it goes away from the shock fronts.
