Nevertheless, obtaining a sharp upper bound on the number of modes remains open even in this seemingly simple setting. The best previously available upper bounds applicable to the homoscedastic three-component setting were 42592 and, more recently, 72. These bounds were derived for substantially more general classes of Gaussian mixtures and are therefore not optimized for the present setting.
