In a harmonic guide, the transverse ground state samples $|\\boldsymbol{\\xi}|\\sim \\ell_\\perp^{-1}\\sim\\sqrt{\\omega}$; narrowing the guide therefore strengthens a local evanescent boundary response without introducing a bulk potential barrier.
