We propose here a coordinate free and self-contained mathematical presentation of the covariant Batalin-Vilkovisky Poisson reduction of a general gauge theory. It was explained in physical terms (DeWitt indices) in Henneaux and Teitelboim's book on quantization of gauge theories.
