These theories exhibit exotic global symmetries, a peculiar spectrum of charged states, unusual gauge symmetries, and surprising dualities. Many of the systems we study have a known lattice construction. In particular, one of them is a known gapless fracton model. The novelty here is in their continuum field theory description. In this paper, we focus on models with a global $U(1)$ symmetry and in a followup paper we will study models with a global $\\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry.","authors_text":"Nathan Seiberg, Shu-Heng Shao","cross_cats":["hep-th"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"cond-mat.str-el","submitted_at":"2020-03-31T18:00:00Z","title":"Exotic $U(1)$ Symmetries, Duality, and Fractons in 3+1-Dimensional Quantum Field Theory"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"2004.00015","kind":"arxiv","version":3},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:ded6fac89d73425d5140d92fb8c7dadd460a26928f8d661166de7537e4d750e0","target":"record","created_at":"2026-07-05T01:40:25Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"8cd754a89d200adb89ff82d0c46581c0b39e14e5a1b0fbb17ff4942e630d7756","cross_cats_sorted":["hep-th"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"cond-mat.str-el","submitted_at":"2020-03-31T18:00:00Z","title_canon_sha256":"78c23c2c8efae257f6d760ce9b395961b87e9d8f08d4014c24634a1b8fad4ad3"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"2004.00015","kind":"arxiv","version":3}},"canonical_sha256":"3f583739ea48d8dae75135ae06d1c41c30d576fa3bf91520fc9a87beb437211b","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"3f583739ea48d8dae75135ae06d1c41c30d576fa3bf91520fc9a87beb437211b","first_computed_at":"2026-07-05T01:40:25.647959Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-07-05T01:40:25.647959Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"phUQRRqdd4fP2hvRdAiMMrWGmNiXw/ZNEbtOBMi8m+Vv4RnL3rX+2FtH5oy7DgLTiNAsWTzn5H5PSHukUj4YDA==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-07-05T01:40:25.648449Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"2004.00015","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":3}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:ded6fac89d73425d5140d92fb8c7dadd460a26928f8d661166de7537e4d750e0","sha256:102e75db2b57a907a7ceda86cf5313c42b1cc229d9ad55b5f2e5c216427e0d06"],"state_sha256":"0dff4ec4bb38051687c2b4928b9e99905b403041f2fd203548d4d3bac4901065"}
