We use excitation-dependent transient absorption spectroscopy and comparison with published results on \\b{eta}-carotene to demonstrate that the so-called S* feature in astaxanthin, echinenone and spheroidenone spectra is due to an impurity in the sample. Excitation at the absorption band-edge results in a transient absorption spectrum dominated by the pure S1 photo-induced absorption, with no contribution from impurities (S*). We find that this S1 absorption resembles the triplet excited-state absorption","authors_text":"Alexander Auty, Andrew J Musser, Branislav Dzurnak, C Neil Hunter, Daniel W Polak, Federico Branchi, George A Sutherland, Giulio Cerullo, Jack Chidgey, Jenny Clark","cross_cats":["cond-mat.mtrl-sci"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"physics.chem-ph","submitted_at":"2019-01-15T16:09:58Z","title":"Band-edge Excitation of Carotenoids Removes S* Revealing Triplet-pair Contributions to the S1 Absorption Spectrum"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"1901.04900","kind":"arxiv","version":1},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:19a33631a8cc4e99833a485118e8bed5627e9f3d906026646509ea418b28d883","target":"record","created_at":"2026-05-17T23:56:21Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"b7a23f86100d841015f4780f523c6704e1459f7ce7bc3d3ea240b7ba9971eeb6","cross_cats_sorted":["cond-mat.mtrl-sci"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"physics.chem-ph","submitted_at":"2019-01-15T16:09:58Z","title_canon_sha256":"a1346346882d9d5b03e4f53fef498a67d19df8616694d4ccda89ccc45117f40b"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"1901.04900","kind":"arxiv","version":1}},"canonical_sha256":"3e3d5e6081d24fc9b43cb968cc6343245a73302fff08e174ef28cd1ecf574906","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"3e3d5e6081d24fc9b43cb968cc6343245a73302fff08e174ef28cd1ecf574906","first_computed_at":"2026-05-17T23:56:21.367636Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-05-17T23:56:21.367636Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"nEgV5+mKqkeI41BxutadFL2lHCalCTJoNqdcllepROfMDYBFRvxHcuF6cxM/r/ERowSJiqc+aHwd0mRyCFiWCw==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-05-17T23:56:21.368272Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"1901.04900","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":1}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:19a33631a8cc4e99833a485118e8bed5627e9f3d906026646509ea418b28d883","sha256:79be3384ee9021b9961ea69a06b54ed088f5e882c0e86205e80207a6bd9b95b1"],"state_sha256":"3ccca458b21085e57cc4633afe3d2a06629c6b685f1d89c07648ec2b72bbfe92"}
