In this paper we replace p-values with their natural competitor, e-values, which are closely related to betting, Bayes factors, and likelihood ratios. We demonstrate that e-values are often mathematically more tractable; in particular, in multiple testing of a single hypothesis, e-values can be merged simply by averaging them. This allows us to develop efficient procedures using e-values for testing multiple hypotheses.","authors_text":"Ruodu Wang, Vladimir Vovk","cross_cats":["stat.TH"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"math.ST","submitted_at":"2019-12-12T18:29:28Z","title":"E-values: Calibration, combination, and applications"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"1912.06116","kind":"arxiv","version":4},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:6201fae6fac4957e44f190c4f6bc35645b1cfe33c9eaa89c5c3b992f3e3107f4","target":"record","created_at":"2026-07-05T03:24:54Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"a52cb7d83ce3da13de5525474d0c4812ce396b1ddcab3325125630a1b0a798b9","cross_cats_sorted":["stat.TH"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"math.ST","submitted_at":"2019-12-12T18:29:28Z","title_canon_sha256":"0751f6ec9cec16e54bda9dd487516757d511a45aba1b71c0bbd10995cd03aacd"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"1912.06116","kind":"arxiv","version":4}},"canonical_sha256":"474a94903997bccec4996a8301a4ceff408f9f810ae61bdf69981998cd0094a6","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"474a94903997bccec4996a8301a4ceff408f9f810ae61bdf69981998cd0094a6","first_computed_at":"2026-07-05T03:24:54.388749Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-07-05T03:24:54.388749Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"aEtkrOQGQsd4E5JNubd4KUhDTabnT7kEEOwLtDJBm1/mytNSpTNQV60VY27IxyZSFzagVeb7npP6TIOBQmQ0CQ==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-07-05T03:24:54.389190Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"1912.06116","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":4}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:6201fae6fac4957e44f190c4f6bc35645b1cfe33c9eaa89c5c3b992f3e3107f4","sha256:15a0b5cf0e9bff66b8821c652a3bc47ce5cacd1e19bf352a58e32104b144d8b9"],"state_sha256":"681a39f3d9a90223f2b17552358b55b362fb73eb65e1be937d1877d19b5541df"}
