In this paper, we study the finite sample performance of meta-learners for estimation of heterogeneous treatment effects under the usage of sample-splitting and cross-fitting to reduce the overfitting bias. In both synthetic and semi-synthetic simulations we find that the performance of the meta-learners in finite samples greatly depends on the estimation procedure. The results imply that sample-splitting and cross-fitting are beneficial in large samples for bias reduction and effic","authors_text":"Gabriel Okasa","cross_cats":["stat.ML"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"econ.EM","submitted_at":"2022-01-30T00:52:33Z","title":"Meta-Learners for Estimation of Causal Effects: Finite Sample Cross-Fit Performance"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"2201.12692","kind":"arxiv","version":1},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:1ba50053caa2f96d055a6eb0466f1515670abb0f0793d402131b769dce2995dd","target":"record","created_at":"2026-07-05T03:52:39Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"79fc607f1847c5d1dfea98f1fd27a1c49d5f7a898d64e2cbb1de101ce42c6ee1","cross_cats_sorted":["stat.ML"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"econ.EM","submitted_at":"2022-01-30T00:52:33Z","title_canon_sha256":"c110b8eee3bff0febedc41defa82aca0a734d995738843e4e0eebb16386aaf00"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"2201.12692","kind":"arxiv","version":1}},"canonical_sha256":"5dad394c7c77eb8594d7d579b2650b9c81f69255ef56bdd34f74a3f5227149f9","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"5dad394c7c77eb8594d7d579b2650b9c81f69255ef56bdd34f74a3f5227149f9","first_computed_at":"2026-07-05T03:52:39.154547Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-07-05T03:52:39.154547Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"I55tZdtb5CC9SkGQAcB8HEdt6W6O56IzP5dntiU7+yt/RTCW5lqbkUHPBSxeFhW41Mo3UGsfJPZjVhVTx7kTBQ==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-07-05T03:52:39.154941Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"2201.12692","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":1}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:1ba50053caa2f96d055a6eb0466f1515670abb0f0793d402131b769dce2995dd","sha256:ee5f4dc26283bd07a6fdd99a47b0310cbff8ad84c9f3c79c70bd64d527e14cdd"],"state_sha256":"ebe3fa80377f9d7f970972fb4e3282ecd85c13aba5a7437281a3315ed03944f5"}
