These superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) have been a focus of intensive study. I review the accumulated observations and discuss the implications for the physics of these extreme explosions. SLSNe can be classified into hydrogen poor (SLSNe-I) and hydrogen rich (SLSNe-II) events.
