We show that the universal cover $\\tilde M$ is a higher rank symmetric space iff $H^2_b(M;\\R)\\to H^2(M;\\R)$ is injective (and otherwise the kernel is infinite-dimensional). This is the converse of a theorem of Burger-Monod. The proof uses the celebrated Rank Rigidity Theorem, as well as a new construction of quasi-homomorphisms on groups that act on CAT(0) spaces and contain rank 1 elements.","authors_text":"Koji Fujiwara, Mladen Bestvina","cross_cats":["math.GT"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"math.GR","submitted_at":"2007-02-09T20:31:47Z","title":"A characterization of higher rank symmetric spaces via bounded cohomology"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"math/0702274","kind":"arxiv","version":3},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:6ede7f1aaef04750ef312d22a6d602780c1e919c6186fbcac1d305b93cc62842","target":"record","created_at":"2026-07-04T15:12:49Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"51773c36cb66cf1b8c4ded56c6eb65ae7a7f50d4a6b4cd3af685920f669af029","cross_cats_sorted":["math.GT"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"math.GR","submitted_at":"2007-02-09T20:31:47Z","title_canon_sha256":"ebd3ac6451d020a356f4715ae7ed0698d06865807643a2fced836296aaee23a8"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"math/0702274","kind":"arxiv","version":3}},"canonical_sha256":"81b40d23d772f46e767dd07533d12f08857c7c1b525dc691ae1345daf3424ef5","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"81b40d23d772f46e767dd07533d12f08857c7c1b525dc691ae1345daf3424ef5","first_computed_at":"2026-07-04T15:12:49.707774Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-07-04T15:12:49.707774Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"bke/hmIAiYPaRHxMsvEvE0LHawdc8XMC+RnxErNwo26UmMuGk2tQDxW4yOAjBEGrA5h89mCHYRK61WtLYuL2Bw==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-07-04T15:12:49.708168Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"math/0702274","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":3}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:6ede7f1aaef04750ef312d22a6d602780c1e919c6186fbcac1d305b93cc62842","sha256:2e921e0ea3530c5b10917b9095c91d0e94c214d566a83ea477c276d039bc23b2"],"state_sha256":"6711cdf283fdcfcf0e046ee179a6fddaf86b3966cad373530ea0b390ac400ecc"}
