Using exponential distributions as priors for clocks, we analyze how well one can keep time with a single qubit freely precessing under a magnetic field. We find that, at least with a single qubit, quantum mechanics does not allow exact timekeeping, in contrast to classical mechanics which does. We find the design of the single-qubit clock that leads to maximum accuracy. Further, we find an energy versus accuracy tradeoff --- the energy cost is at least $k_BT$ times the improvement in accuracy as measured by the entropy reduction in going","authors_text":"Abhishek Deshpande, Bhaskaran Muralidharan, Manoj Gopalkrishnan, Praveen Sriram, Varshith Kandula","cross_cats":["cond-mat.mes-hall","cs.IT","math.IT","physics.ins-det","quant-ph"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"cond-mat.stat-mech","submitted_at":"2016-02-01T13:08:37Z","title":"A Bayesian view of Single-Qubit Clocks, and an Energy versus Accuracy tradeoff"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"1602.00508","kind":"arxiv","version":2},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:23b7b5e1d180dec53b5d3baf453f58ff63c6cb63daf3caa8f1a96264ea402f04","target":"record","created_at":"2026-05-18T00:33:53Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"0da96483bb0fafb619a011704ff2c7e2921df22998e09932c2375ebfbd26442f","cross_cats_sorted":["cond-mat.mes-hall","cs.IT","math.IT","physics.ins-det","quant-ph"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"cond-mat.stat-mech","submitted_at":"2016-02-01T13:08:37Z","title_canon_sha256":"23765d22420fef7f5147968d265ea71ed31d6ba22680de3271fc18103d288e11"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"1602.00508","kind":"arxiv","version":2}},"canonical_sha256":"8f82bdbd8bf88acb665ac15ef66872ca2c8ce1718ffb5fee092efb143146367a","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"8f82bdbd8bf88acb665ac15ef66872ca2c8ce1718ffb5fee092efb143146367a","first_computed_at":"2026-05-18T00:33:53.400669Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-05-18T00:33:53.400669Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"0ig9EjRTdRu7OWIVtdR0gWSQELUoD0oEKJfHU4kbc4ISncIFl0jIFAIGPPxppk2Ud8GaChT7/wL05xHIUMicCg==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-05-18T00:33:53.401399Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"1602.00508","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":2}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:23b7b5e1d180dec53b5d3baf453f58ff63c6cb63daf3caa8f1a96264ea402f04","sha256:f4440209c935b78bc7b40bb7090c0689d163f0184ac49374a1183dcba3223280"],"state_sha256":"656e65921780f856129c048b09242b1d226755725ac745b55c61732e7d7e2c19"}
