In particular, we prove the noncommutative analogue of the classical Dunford-Schwartz maximal ergodic inequality for positive contractions on $L_p$ and the analogue of Stein's maximal inequality for symmetric positive contractions. We also obtain the corresponding individual ergodic theorems.
