We explain how greenhouse gases like water vapor or carbon dioxide, differ from non-greenhouse gases like nitrogen or oxygen. Using simple thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, we show that a planet with sufficiently high concentrations of greenhouse gases must develop a convecting troposphere.
