However, Brillouin interactions are exceedingly weak in conventional silicon photonic waveguides, stifling progress towards silicon-based Brillouin lasers. The recent advent of hybrid photonic-phononic waveguides has revealed Brillouin interactions to be one of the strongest and most tailorable nonlinearities in silicon.
