They have been widely used in accelerating first-order methods for solving large-scale sparse learning problems. In this paper, we develop a new screening method called Newton screening (NS) which is a generalized Newton method with a built-in screening mechanism. We derive an equivalent KKT system for the Lasso and utilize a generalized Newton method to solve the KKT equations. Based on this KKT system, a built-in working set with a relatively small size is first determined using the","authors_text":"Jian Huang, Jin Liu, Lican Kang, Xiliang Lu, Yanyan Liu, Yuanyuan Yang, Yuling Jiao","cross_cats":["cs.LG","math.OC","stat.ME"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"stat.ML","submitted_at":"2020-01-27T11:25:33Z","title":"On Newton Screening"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"2001.10616","kind":"arxiv","version":3},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:04569bc65e83b04e735c05d2105364c4b80a7a0c3da26ec7c536854e70e7ce59","target":"record","created_at":"2026-07-05T06:03:04Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"da6c27eaf67a68da5c1e8438b62d9784b692c72ba52eb0e95d222cce1e3371ef","cross_cats_sorted":["cs.LG","math.OC","stat.ME"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"stat.ML","submitted_at":"2020-01-27T11:25:33Z","title_canon_sha256":"1769ce3207d21e25937e7f1fed332dc276e9a29c7fa27111e44d5be612411c6d"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"2001.10616","kind":"arxiv","version":3}},"canonical_sha256":"a3c34dd9b29d2e24b3d2a25b9da00391020e91c183f52409f5582bad54dbe842","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"a3c34dd9b29d2e24b3d2a25b9da00391020e91c183f52409f5582bad54dbe842","first_computed_at":"2026-07-05T06:03:04.934266Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-07-05T06:03:04.934266Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"Da/0bjL5ZfYblHruW7wBb1yx+Q46izMHlZhTfD1OjXxBm/nEsfFnkVrzIK7QY3iELMzsGym5F0VxalrGHZpqDw==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-07-05T06:03:04.934778Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"2001.10616","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":3}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:04569bc65e83b04e735c05d2105364c4b80a7a0c3da26ec7c536854e70e7ce59","sha256:b9f399d28d035a38c4ec4814fd1c50dd60b4c2de84f8ccdcf57adacc7e2c0ca5"],"state_sha256":"967abc1afde70d75f39c13f80b22491d85d202d956de3f4464f3ac20feb6f289"}
