If the container is a smooth convex body and $d\\geq 2$ we show that solutions to the container problem can not have a ``simple structure'' for large $n$. By this we in particular find that there exist arbitrary small $r>0$, such that packings in a smooth, 3-dimensional convex body, with a maximum number of spheres of radius $r$, are necessarily not hexagonal close packings. This contradicts Kepler's famous statement that the cubic or hexagonal close packing ``will","authors_text":"Achill Schuermann","cross_cats":[],"headline":"","license":"","primary_cat":"math.MG","submitted_at":"2005-06-10T15:25:56Z","title":"On packing spheres into containers (about Kepler's finite sphere packing problem)"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"math/0506200","kind":"arxiv","version":2},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:5d5b330d8bc366ae785d3a118ef1446894e9944be924c38f4def6827e353eb62","target":"record","created_at":"2026-05-18T04:10:37Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"c978a1b415e35b2ce77011759e84ade57d9d09815e33e194cb4f5740e1079531","cross_cats_sorted":[],"license":"","primary_cat":"math.MG","submitted_at":"2005-06-10T15:25:56Z","title_canon_sha256":"23ca0ebc9832e3462afcfafc3f34a2510afde9377cd98e9b03c13ced7cc919e1"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"math/0506200","kind":"arxiv","version":2}},"canonical_sha256":"a94f7ab1253a5eecf6611168e085552cafdedfb0dbee9a8acb67d24ef632942e","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"a94f7ab1253a5eecf6611168e085552cafdedfb0dbee9a8acb67d24ef632942e","first_computed_at":"2026-05-18T04:10:37.469708Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-05-18T04:10:37.469708Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"Ylw4a0M1a1Xw4r581ZdnQHK1LCrqKjZg7kPrAnXrlMqDw92v2BmmkUvOWMSTdskolkULTW8yE7/sOc2TjhD5Dg==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-05-18T04:10:37.470186Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"math/0506200","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":2}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:5d5b330d8bc366ae785d3a118ef1446894e9944be924c38f4def6827e353eb62","sha256:f4c00910bf649ad61f5f61c275c055a33702a27f3228315a9d2f2106a8b7e9e8"],"state_sha256":"9f69c78f559d7c18dea542332900fb89b3ca3995a69571fee9252f1e66e771f4"}
