Typically, the functional error dominates, but in many interesting situations, the density-driven error dominates. Examples range from calculations of electron affinities to preferred geometries of ions and radicals in solution. In these abnormal cases, the DFT error can be greatly reduced by using a more accurate density. A small orbital gap often indicates a substantial density-driven error.","authors_text":"Eunji Sim, Kieron Burke, Min-Cheol Kim","cross_cats":["cond-mat.other"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"physics.chem-ph","submitted_at":"2012-12-13T05:33:56Z","title":"Understanding and reducing errors in density functional calculations"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"1212.3054","kind":"arxiv","version":3},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:8ac10ea2c44822b1dc78d0255af3a168b36c218764511cefe68352ee34775e9c","target":"record","created_at":"2026-05-18T01:52:39Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"07517e94ffd3cdf46725d046950ea2e2376e11f43faa62f96847e4b1bf47bf8b","cross_cats_sorted":["cond-mat.other"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"physics.chem-ph","submitted_at":"2012-12-13T05:33:56Z","title_canon_sha256":"48dd97bfbf2c145376f54f19499dd48aed6e3151c665a02b4d8b118415b46f13"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"1212.3054","kind":"arxiv","version":3}},"canonical_sha256":"aadc8444b3fe6fc2385c8c34dd65699011b858fc707c624065c6161641c29dee","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"aadc8444b3fe6fc2385c8c34dd65699011b858fc707c624065c6161641c29dee","first_computed_at":"2026-05-18T01:52:39.123811Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-05-18T01:52:39.123811Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"hu3ZrTWaqZOREzeU+aWkzR3/BLnE8BLVRb11zLXfHa4WoTasECfBd8rtvRScoAMe0oAllt5WoqCkNTiEJ2E/Cw==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-05-18T01:52:39.124245Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"1212.3054","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":3}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:8ac10ea2c44822b1dc78d0255af3a168b36c218764511cefe68352ee34775e9c","sha256:03bd3acb731bd00f26c6383c19010945e53940fc5ea1b8afa27c62995b737f92"],"state_sha256":"a605a51a93d110390f520f64b605bc47e9652c06501206aba2f139cff450172f"}
