It is well known that any root is part of a basis $B$ of $R$. But when can you extend a set of two or more roots to a basis $B$ of $R$? A $\\pi$-system is a linearly independent set of roots, $C$, such that if $\\alpha$ and $\\beta$ are in $C$, then $\\alpha - \\beta$ is not a root. We will use results of Dynkin and Bourbaki to show that with two exceptions, $A_3 \\subset B_n$ and $A_7 \\subset E_8$, an indecomposable $\\pi$-system whose Dynkin diagram is a subdiagram of the Dynkin diagram of $R$ can always be extended to a basis of $R$.","authors_text":"Helmer Aslaksen, Mong Lung Lang","cross_cats":[],"headline":"","license":"","primary_cat":"math.RT","submitted_at":"2004-10-15T20:40:39Z","title":"Extending $\\pi$-systems to bases of root systems"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"math/0410357","kind":"arxiv","version":3},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:85a90bdc8d51b564a9da331856f31da5ecbfbf2f35c129d577efdcd2db978f8d","target":"record","created_at":"2026-05-18T01:05:25Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"bde518d221d9bec62b4ed6556df71871cd0beb0b0a46f0adf1ad91b0a434f53b","cross_cats_sorted":[],"license":"","primary_cat":"math.RT","submitted_at":"2004-10-15T20:40:39Z","title_canon_sha256":"0b06f2bc5ed265f33613732c89417db682f9f0ada5be50c08e2ab7ef5eeb359f"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"math/0410357","kind":"arxiv","version":3}},"canonical_sha256":"b6cca0b6a01a3d7e2bb00f5ae1988f0f021018a098d0284ab353e47fe25c179d","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"b6cca0b6a01a3d7e2bb00f5ae1988f0f021018a098d0284ab353e47fe25c179d","first_computed_at":"2026-05-18T01:05:25.749331Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-05-18T01:05:25.749331Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"gDaAlQCz8Pd737wWlU6OjFLi0trq4jCRIXkHyiFYlzbfFGVRWgSvK9Sa1bHseuOJhbdgsA7xoKd48PKfTAtUCQ==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-05-18T01:05:25.749909Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"math/0410357","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":3}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:85a90bdc8d51b564a9da331856f31da5ecbfbf2f35c129d577efdcd2db978f8d","sha256:2633583dce0f7deba0c01f9348cd8449dcc4d65374b857b5c8019115030b53dc"],"state_sha256":"cb43dbeffd3203dcf2975c36377286cab86a92e7b34a5caa2977342212d9982d"}
